NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

Please note:  the length of time that a patient’s blood glucose test result is deemed eligible for the programme has been temporarily increased from 12 to 24 months. This change will be effective until 1 April 2021, and is still on the basis that the patient has not since been re-tested and confirmed to:

  • have test results within the normal blood glucose range,
  • has been diagnosed as type 2 diabetic, or
  • is currently pregnant.

A new national social media campaign has been launched to promote the risks of developing diabetes type 2, and to encourage people to check their own risk using Diabetes UK’s online ‘Know Your Risk’ tool.

Those found to have a moderate to high risk are automatically directed to their local NHS DPP provider’s website to register themselves onto the programme should they wish to. This new referral pathway aims to make the service more widely available (providing an additional 100,000 places in England) and does not require having a blood-glucose test, or a referral by a healthcare professional.

Should you have any further queries regarding the programme or the recent changes, or if you have feedback to offer on the service, please contact [email protected].
